Homeschool Harmony Choir

Registrations are now open!

Given the current COVID-19 situation, logistics and safety issues prevent us from offering an in-person choir session. Instead, Rochelle Drudge will be leading a session of online group singing lessons for ages 4 - 18.  There will also be several guest clinicians involved in teaching the youth age students. Classes are 30 minutes for children 4 - 12 and an hour for youth 13+.  Although the online format presents many limitations, we are convinced that it can also open up new possibilities of music learning for the students.

Sessions run Tuesdays, Sept. 29 - Nov. 24

Level A:  2:15 - 2:45

Level B:  3:00 - 3:30

Level C:  3:45 - 4:45

Fee: $35 per child

Level A (approx ages 4 - 7 but younger kids could participate as they are able to!)

The focus for this time would be on developing musicianship, with an age-appropriate, participatory (and hopefully fun!) approach.  Sessions will be led by Rochelle Drudge and assisted by Amie Drudge and Sandy Plett.  Parents will be expected to assist the students during each session.

Through singing, movement, echoing and creative improvisation students will explore various elements of music and strengthen their aural, rhythm and vocal skills. Students will build a deeper understanding of music while they're having fun! For students taking instrumental lessons, they will be invited to share pieces they are working on, which may be used as a springboard to teach musical concepts.  We will also work on a song or two that can be sung when we are able to sing together again.

In addition to simple folk songs that will be used for specific teaching purposes, this group will be learning ‘The Tree Song’ by Ken Medema

Level B (approx ages 7 - 12)

The focus for this time would be on developing musicianship and musical understanding as well as strengthening vocal skills. (Many of these items overlap with Level A but are taught more in depth and at a quicker pace at Level B).  Sessions will be led by Rochelle Drudge and assisted by Sandy Plett. Parents will be expected to assist the students during each session.

Level C (approx ages 13 and up)

The focus for this time would be on developing vocal skills, gaining a broader understanding of the voice and strengthening a variety of general musical skills.  Sessions will be facilitated by Rochelle Drudge with different professional choral leaders giving input into the lessons.  Clinicians confirmed so far are Dr. Cathrine Robbins (Assistant Professor of and Music Education at the University of Manitoba); Cynthia Peyson-Wahl (Choral conductor, music teacher in Regina); and Alyssa Hildebrand (voice teacher, Masters from Western; teaching in MB)

Elements of the lesson would include:

-learning about the vocal anatomy and increasing understanding about how to use our bodies properly to enhance vocal production (Dr. Catherine Robbins)

-learning to understand songs in context and working at musical expression (Cynthia Peyson-Wahl)

-vocal exercises to strengthen vocal production, tone, range, etc.

-exercises and activities to enhance tonal and rhythmic audiation (musical thinking/understanding)

-working at vocal issues specific to the male/female voice

-learning a song or two that can be sung when we are able to sing together again!

-one of the repertoire selections will be ‘I Choose Love’ by Mark A. Miller https://www.jwpepper.com/sheet-music/media-player.jsp?&productID=10661699&type=audio

(if time allows, another selection may be added)

In non-COVID times:

Homeschool Harmony Choir is a non-auditioned choir for homeschool children ages 5 - 18.  The choir rehearses weekly in Winkler, MB, for 8 - 10 weeks in the fall and spring. Students rehearse in two ages groups;

Kids Choir - ages 5 - 10

Youth Choir - ages 11 - 18

The vision for this choir is to provide a setting for students to discover the joy of singing together, to strengthen their own voice and musical skills, and to grow in confidence through relationships and performance opportunities.  It's also a great way to connect with other homeschool families in the area!
