Campers: Beginner to RCM Level 8

Student Teachers: RCM Level 9 and up

Prerequisite
All campers must have had one year of private music lessons on their instrument. Full Day Encore Camp is for students ages 7 and up, or entering Grade 2 school in Fall 2026. Campers must be able to read music. Half Day Junior Camp is for 5 - 6 year olds, they are not required to be able to read music.

Our goal is for students to enjoy making music with their peers, develop ensemble playing skills, and be inspired to continue on their musical journey! Our professional and experienced teaching staff hope to encourage and support students in their music studies.

What to Expect

We start the day all together to play some games and hear some great music from our faculty! Then we break off into small groups for a variety of classes for strings and piano. All students will participate in choir, art, and percussion classes. A mid-morning snack of cookies and fruit will be provided. Outdoor free time will happen during snack and lunch hour. We will end the week with a BBQ and performance showcasing the music campers worked on.

Cello, Orchestra
Andrea Bell

Born in Winnipeg, Andrea Bell holds Bachelor Degrees in both Music and Education from the University of Manitoba and a Masters Degree in Cello Performance from the University of British Columbia. Andrea is the founding member and cellist of the Rembrandt String Quartet. A passionate music educator, Ms. Bell is the Director of the String Orchestra Program at Westgate Mennonite Collegiate, where she also teaches French. She maintains a vibrant private cello studio and teaches at the Rosamunde Summer Music Academy at CMU. Andrea has taught cello, conducted youth orchestras and adjudicated music festivals across Manitoba and Saskatchewan, and in Perth Australia. Andrea is the conductor of the Winnipeg Mennonite Community Orchestra and the Winnipeg Youth Symphony Orchestra.

River Sawchyn

Featured in CBC Music’s 2023 top 30 hot classical musicians under 30, River Sawchyn is a violinist and composer from Winnipeg, Canada. He is currently pursuing a Master’s Degree at the University of Michigan, studying with Danielle Belen. River is a five time trophy winner at the Winnipeg Music Festival, has appeared as a soloist with the Winnipeg Youth Symphony Orchestra, and is a three time scholarship winner from the Women’s Musical Club of Winnipeg. River is a passionate student of chamber music, working with members of the Cavani, Emerson and Ehnes string quartets and enjoys performing chamber music throughout the year. Also busy writing music, River is studying composition at the University of Michigan with Evan Chambers. Recent projects include his debut EP Cycles and Stars, publishing of string quartet music with Alias Press and a premiere by the MusicaNova Orchestra in Arizona. As well as an accomplished classical musician, River is a frequent collaborator with a variety of folk ensembles, choral and instrumental groups and is a skilled fiddle player. Previously winning prizes at the Festival du Voyageur fiddle competition and Selkirk fiddle competition, he was invited to compete at the Canadian Grand Masters Fiddle Competition in 2022. As a fiddler he plays in the Red River Folk Ensemble, Duo Nord and 2nd Things 1st. River appreciates music in all forms and enjoys performing in a wide range of venues. River plays on a 1998 Tschu Ho Lee violin, on loan from the Virtu Foundation.

Sophie Reimer-Epp

Sophie Reimer-Epp is a Winnipeg-born violinist with a passion for orchestral playing, chamber music, and contemporary music. She is currently completing her Bachelor of Music with a major in Violin Performance at the University of Toronto with Dr. Timothy Ying. She has extensive orchestral and ensemble experience from her years in the Winnipeg Youth Orchestras, the University of Ottawa Orchestra, and the University of Toronto Symphony Orchestra, as well as the contemporary ensemble the Blank Canvas Sound Collective and numerous chamber ensembles. She has also had the privilege of working with a wide variety of North America and Europe's most renowned violin teachers, including Vadim Gluzman, Timothy Chooi, Cho-Liang Lin, and Olivier Charlier, which has informed her personal performance style. From a young age Sophie has had a fascination with contemporary music which has led her to great exploration of the genre in the form of workshops, summer study programs, and personal projects. Sophie is co-founder and director of the new music concert series Contemporary Music Interactive. In addition to performing, Sophie has a passion for teaching and she currently has a thriving violin studio in Toronto.

Theresa Thordarson

Theresa Thordarson’s boundless creative drive springs from a lifetime of musical risk-taking. Growing up in rural Manitoba, Theresa experienced an environment where the classical canon was just one of many influences. Her curiosity has led her to explore unexpected connections across disparate musical worlds. Her creations embrace playful pastoral poetry, subtle and surprising harmonies, and memorable melodies. Theresa performs traditional, contemporary, and original music as a pianist/keyboardist, collaborator, and vocalist. Highlight performances include concerts for Westben’s Performer-Composer Residency in Campbellford ON, Winnipeg Baroque Festival, Send and Receive, Winterruption, Nuit Blanche Winnipeg, and Lethbridge’s Centric Festival. She also sings, synths, and writes adventurous pop music as one half of the duo Bicycle Face with guitarist Ava Glendinning, and released a solo chamber-folk album entitled ‘revery’ in 2024 under the name theresa thor. Theresa makes her home in Winnipeg where she hosts a lively teaching studio and many plants.

Leanne Zacharias

Cellist Leanne Zacharias is an educator and interdisciplinary artist who collaborates with composers, songwriters, architects and artists of all stripes. Originally from small-town Southern Manitoba, she completed Master and Doctoral studies at the Shepherd School of Music and University of Texas - Austin before joining the cello section of the Houston Symphony Orchestra. Now, her diverse career includes orchestral, chamber music and solo playing along with concert design and collaboration including feature presentations at the Museum for Human Rights, International Cello Festival of Canada, Winnipeg Design Festival, Newfoundland's Sound Symposium, and international festivals in Iceland, Scotland, UK, Mexico, Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands. She has premiered hundreds of pieces, worked with leading composers including Nicole Lizee, Arvo Part and Joan Tower, and toured with John K Samson, The Mountain Goats, Christine Fellows, the Manitoba Chamber Orchestra and SaskPower. Her solo album Music for Spaces was released by Redshift Records in 2021, and 2026 will see the release of her second album and as soloist in Cree composer Andrew Balfour’s Notinikew oratorio. Leanne is currently an artistic director of the Groundswell new music series in Winnipeg, Brandon’s Wheat City Nuit Blanche, the Wild Studio creative workshop (held in Canadian National Parks), and has served on juries for the Juno Awards, Canada Council for the Arts, Winnipeg Arts Council, Warming Huts Art and Architecture Competition and Canadian New Music Network. An energetic teacher, she has lectured at the Parsons Design School in New York, the Winnipeg Art Gallery, Banff’s Research in Culture workshop, delivered masterclasses across North America and taught at Cadenza, Rosamunde and Domaine Forget summer festivals. On faculty at Brandon University since 2008, she is currently the Acting Dean of the Brandon University School of Music.
