Orchestras

ALLEGRO STRINGS

Allegro Strings is for violin and cello students playing at a beginner to RCM gr. 1 level (Suzuki book 1). Students primarily play in the keys of D and G major; note reading is not required. The goal of this group is to enjoy making music with others, develop aural and music skills, practice ensemble skills, and learn proper movement and technical development.

The repertoire mainly focuses on folk songs and cannons/round songs, either in unison or 2 parts. Games and activities are used to introduce sight-reading and string orchestra knowledge and to strengthen students’ understanding of musical concepts. All ages are welcome.

DACAPO STRINGS

DaCapo Strings is an elementary-level string orchestra for violin, viola, cello, and bass players who have started sight reading and are growing in a variety of techniques. Students are required to be at RCM gr. 2–3 level. All ages are welcome.

ENCORE STRINGS

Encore Strings is an intermediate string orchestra for violin, viola, cello, and bass players who are developing confidence in sight reading and a variety of techniques such as shifting, vibrato, off-the-string playing. Students are required to be at RCM gr. 4–6 level. First violins will be expected to play in positions. All ages are welcome

POST ROAD ORCHESTRA

Post Road Orchestra is for musicians who have ensemble experience and are playing at a minimum RCM gr. 7 level with confidence. Players are expected to have sight reading skills and practice time outside of rehearsal, enabling them to learn a wide variety of repertoire rather quickly. All ages are welcome.

Choirs & Vocal

WINKLER SENIOR CHOIR

The Winkler Senior Choir is a voluntary choral program for seniors and it has no auditions or report cards. The choir meets every Tuesday morning from September through May to sing, laugh, and encourage one another.

The choir began as a program at the Winkler Senior Centre in the fall of 1998. Over the past two decades, the choir has performed in local church services, at charitable events, banquets, senior choir festivals, and through annual concerts in December and spring. For over a decade, the choir has collaborated with DKSM’s vocal groups, including Homeschool Harmony and the recently added Con Brio vocal ensemble, in its annual spring concert. These partnerships have fostered a mutually enriching relationship. In September 2018, the Winkler Senior Choir integrated into the Douglas Kuhl School of Music, providing additional opportunities for collaboration.

CON BRIO

Con Brio is a musical theater ensemble where students have the opportunity to explore their voice in a group setting.  Members will learn to build confidence in their voice, develop collaboration skills (harmony, blend), performance skills and grow in musicianship. Primarily, we will be exploring musical theater repertoire!

Con Brio is open to all voices in grades 7-12 (ages 12-18), and will be accepting a max of 16 students per session.  Open to students of all levels and experiences, each season will end with a collaborative concert alongside other DKSM ensembles!

Private Instruction

ALLEGRO STRINGS

Our DKSM teachers believe that every person is capable of learning to make music and we strive for relationships of care, trust and respect as we support our students' musical journey.  We hope to create an environment that is enjoyable, encouraging and safe for students and their families.

Each DKSM teacher has their own approach to music teaching and will incorporate their own blend of teaching methods and techniques.

Our hope is to build an engaging, positive and fun atmosphere where the love of music can be experienced and creativity is welcomed.
